As the heart of the Silicon Valley, San Jose has seen a lot of growth and changes over the years. Downtown San Jose has been the focus of revitalization lately with a variety of new development projects. Now this part of the city could see even more change. As reported by the Mercury News, the San Jose City Council has approved a proposal which would sell 16 downtown plots to Google. In doing so an extensive urban village is poised to be developed.
The City Council approval is just the first step however. There still needs to be impact reviews and community feedback received before final approval of the new Google village can go through. What makes the proposal appealing to many is Google’s approach toward creating a viable urban center which embraces all facets of urban living into account, including environmental impacts.
Should the downtown Google village be approved, 16 city parcels will be transformed into a transit centered space with 6-8 million square feet of mixed use buildings; which could bring up to 20,000 jobs to San Jose. The overall vision is to provide an area of San Jose where more residents can live near where they work, and enjoy the amenities of the new village with ease.
It is estimated up to 3,000 housing units could be included in this expansion of the core downtown area around Diridon Station. These new residences would be in addition to new housing which has already been under way. Plans are also in play to add another 6,000 units independent of the Google village in downtown San Jose.
In a letter presented by San Jose Mayor, Sam Liccardo and other Council members, it was noted that approval of the Google Village would bring a variety of benefits to downtown, including, “Extraordinary architecture, urban design, environmental sustainability, retail amenities, transit ridership and vibrant public spaces”
