The Santa Teresa Foothills neighborhood in San Jose will have more open space for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. Fifty two acres of natural habitat has been purchased by the Santa Clara Valley Open Space Authority, according to an article published by the San Jose Mercury News. This is great news for the community as many have been seeking to help ensure more open space is preserved from urban sprawl.
The land was purchased from local, long time residents of the region, the Pfeiffer family. Not only is the parcel of land a beautiful and diverse piece of natural green space, there is historical significance for it as well. Greystone Quarry was located in the area, providing the building blocks of many historical landmarks within the South Bay region.
The land itself is located near the Santa Teresa Foothills, providing one more connection to nature for San Jose. This is the goal of the SCV Open Space Authority, preserving natural habitats through an urban greenbelt. Another primary goal of the Authority is to create trails connecting these open spaces to one another. This in turn promotes healthier living, neighborhood connection and environmental preservation.
Visitors will enjoy sweeping views of the Almaden Valley as they make their way along trails being built. Wildlife inhabitants include bobcats, coyotes, deer, eagles, hawks and wild turkeys. Of special note, two indigenous butterflies which are threatened and endangered, the Bay Checkerspot and Santa Clara Valley Dudleya, have been found on the land. With this acreage being preserved, these species will retain vital habitat. The space will be open to public later this year. In the meantime, Docent-led tours will be available for anyone who wants to visit sooner.
