Being environmentally conscious is a good thing. Having green energy options is even better. San Mateo County thinks so too. In a recent article published by the San Jose Mercury News, the county is saying goodbye to PG&E for electricity service, and hello to greener, less expensive energy. San Mateo County joins other communities across the state who are seeking energy services which support lowering green-house gasses, a top environmental concern.
Since a law was passed in 2002, allowing local governments the option to manage their energy services, California has seen new providers bringing new eco-friendly energy options to its residents and businesses. Peninsula Clean Energy has recently begun servicing about 20% of electricity customers in San Mateo County, the rest are expected to follow by April 2017. While the switch will be seamless for customers, they can opt out of the change and remain with PG&E.
Peninsula Clean Energy has begun servicing other counties in the region including Marin, Napa and Sonoma. Santa Clara and Santa Cruz Counties are reviewing clean energy options and expected to follow suit in the coming months. Peninsula Clean Energy is offering an energy package with a minimum of 50% renewable energy sources providing power to customers. There is also an upgrade plan where consumers can have 100% renewable energy for their home. Currently, PG&E only offers up to 30% renewable energy for customers.
The new energy service will also save residents a bit. While the difference is small, with the average monthly cost anticipated to be $85-$86, this is lower than the average monthly cost of $88 with PG&E. Ultimately San Mateo County will have cleaner, less expensive energy available for everyone.
