Memorial Day has come at last, and with it, the unofficial start of the summer season has begun. Part of my job as a realtor is to know what makes California such a great place to live, and to share that information with you. If there is one thing we have in plenty, it is area events and festivals, especially in the summer.
In June alone I have found over 30 summer events taking place across the state from a great website, SeeCalifornia.com. This website is not just for visitors to use, but is a great resource for residents as well. It is full of things to do, places to go, as well as information about our cities, resources, travel and shopping within the state.
To get your summer started right, I have compiled a list of some exciting festivals and events being held in June within Northern California. These events are family friendly, and many are free to attend. I hope whatever you choose to do with your summer; you enjoy all that our region has to offer.
The first weekend in June is when Pony Express Days are held in McKinleyville, a great North Coastal town, near Arcata. From June 3-7th you can join the community with a cook-off, fireman’s muster games, Pony Express Dance and a parade. The core of the festival is held at Pierson Park and includes a Gymkhana, games played on horseback.
If you live around the East Bay region, then you are probably already aware of one of the most popular events of the year, the Alameda Sand Castle & Sculpture Contest. This is a great chance to hit the beach on June 6th and check out the incredible sand art that will be made.
Take a drive inland just past Chico and you can take a step back in time at the Durham Threshing Bee Festival coming up June 6-7th. This annual country fair lets you experience what life was like at the turn of the 19th/20th centuries. You can see what it took to farm without modern machinery, the kids can help make homemade lemonade and biscuits, and there will be plenty of artisan crafts on hand.
June in San Francisco would not be complete without a stop at the North Beach Festival coming up June 13-14th. This year marks the 61st Annual arts and crafts festival in Little Italy, and is said to be one of the country’s first outdoor festivals. With more than 100 arts and crafts booths, 20 food vendors and three stages of live music, this is a weekend full of entertainment.
Take a Sunday Drive on June 14th to Fortuna in Humboldt County to the north, for the Annual Art & Wine in the Park event. The region’s best wines and artists are featured so you can taste wine, sample fine food and find some incredible hand crafted art. The event is free to attend, with tasting packages at $20.00 to sample some of our best wineries.
If you know a guy who loves bluegrass and is a father, why not treat him to the Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival? This festival is held every year on Father’s Day weekend and includes a full lineup of music from June 18- 21st. Located in Nevada County, Grass Valley is the largest city of the area, and will be worth the drive for any lover of bluegrass music.
