Why Real Estate Agent is on the Top Ten List of Most Stressful Jobs


Have you ever wondered which jobs are considered the most stressful in California? Real Estate Agent is on that list! If you don’t personally know a real estate agent, or have been one yourself, you would never know how stressful it can be.

One of the main reasons that real estate is stressful is because the agent is solely assisting a buyer or seller in the largest purchase of their life. The agent worries about losing an offer on a property their client loves, or even putting the client’s EMD (Earnest Money Deposit) in jeopardy depending on how it is handled.

Another thing that most people do not see are the back end negotiations. This is constant throughout a transaction, and the agent shoulders all of the responsibility, late night calls, early morning conversations, and tough negotiations on behalf of their client.

The general public has a stereotype that agents just show homes, make offers, and sit back waiting for their big paychecks. This is not how a real estate agent works, and if they do, they are not a very good agent! A good agent works for clients as if it were their business. Full-time agents work over 9 to 10 hours a day, and are on call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Most weekends are spent with their clients rather than with their families. It is a profession that many look down upon, but agents have a schedule and stress level that most people cannot handle.

Real estate agents are constantly on deadlines. There are many aspects of a home purchase that the buyer and seller do not see, and this falls to the agent to take care of. Different items in the contract are due at different times throughout the transaction. The agent is responsible for verifying everything is completed and submitted by the agreed upon deadlines.

Most clients do not see how stressful a real estate agent’s job is. If the client doesn’t see how stressful buying or selling a home can be, that means the agent must be doing a pretty good job filtering all the stress so the clients don’t have to.
